Cultural Capital

Experiences are at the heart of Ridgeway and the children’s Ridgeway journey.

Alongside the PSHE curriculum we want our children to gain experiences from as many as aspects as we can.

These include:

At Ridgeway, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an embedded part of our broad and balanced curriculum. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is at the heart of our school ethos.


The Essence of Ridgeway is to be the best that we can be. We want all children to reach for the stars and aspire to make a difference.


Our ethos is to give all children invaluable experiences and make life-long memories and relationships that will support them build foundations for life.


We recognise, when children start at Ridgeway, they will have had different experiences. We want to give  all of our children positive experiences of the world around them, knowledge of their surrounding and wider environments, experiences of strong, loving relationships and exposure to rich language.

The PSHE curriculum will be delivered through direct teaching sessions, experiences and throughout the school day through groups at playtime and stories for example.

The following programmes will be used:


· The Local Authority– The One Life Scheme

· RSE– Lucinda and Godfrey

· RE– Operation Encompass the Next Steps

· Aspirations– Little People, Big Dreams

· Some topics will also be covered in other subjects such as health in science and internet safety in ICT.


The PSHE programme of study focuses on three core themes:

Living in the Wider World:

· Money, spending and saving

· Making choices, decisions, responsibilities

· Needs and wants

· The world around us

· People, jobs and respect

· Role of the internet

· Community and groups

· Media, digital resilience, online safety and influences



· Similarities and differences

· People/families who care for us and groups we belong to

· Friendships, making positive friendships, becoming independent and dealing with arguments

· Feelings and managing feelings

· Behaviour, bullying, words and actions

· Respect for self and others, courteous behaviour, safety (including online) and rights

· Different relationships, changing and growing and moving to secondary school


Health and wellbeing:

· Being healthy, hygiene, medicines, playing, sleep, dental care and keeping active

· Keeping safe, risks, rules, people who help us and taking more responsibility

· Feelings, mood, emotions, expressions and behaviour

· First aid, accidents and dealing with emergencies

· Personal attributes and qualities, individuality and stereotypes


The intended impact of our PSHE programme is to support our children to become healthy and responsible members of society, as well as preparing them for life and work in the future.



· Children will be aware of their aspirations and gain ideas about where they would like to be in their futures.

· Children will know the importance of a healthy body, healthy relationships and a healthy mind.

· Children will be aware of their changing emotions and bodies as they grow and move through puberty.

· Children will form positive relationships and learn how to deal with conflict.

· Children will have self-confidence, self-awareness and a positive body image.


Early Years

In early years PSHE is taught both secretly in group time activities and throughout the children’s learning through play. Social stories, picture news and visits and experiences all add to the Early Years development in PSHE.



· Show an understanding of their own feelings and those of others, and regulate their behaviour accordingly;

· Have a positive sense of self and show resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge;

· Pay attention to their teacher and follow multi-step instructions


Managing Self


· Manage their own basic hygiene and personal needs, including dressing and going to the toilet;

· Understand the importance of healthy food choices;

· Explain the reasons for rules and know right from wrong.


Building Relationships


· Work and play cooperatively and take turns with others;

· Form positive attachments and friendships;

· Show sensitivities to others’ needs.


Little People Big Dreams


In addition to the end of Key Stage statement requirements staff will have a designated influencer to discuss each term. This will be based around the stories Little People, Big Dreams (Appendix E), for example Mother Teresa, David Attenborough and Anne Frank. This is to aspire our young people in their future dreams and aspirations. The influencer will be displayed in each classroom to coincide with artist of the term and musician of the term. The PSHE coordinator will also deliver assemblies on aspirational people not covered in sessions. This will link to the song ‘Reach for the Stars’ by S Club 7 as a whole school aspirational song.


Teachers will choose their book based on their current topic, an experience or a relevant event happening in the world. This will become a talking point in the class.


This will be put at the forefront of the children’s aspirations through classroom discussions, an interactive display and assemblies.
